Pat was born
and grew up in farm country, Ohio, but after living in Southwest Virginia
for 38 years, Pat considers herself a native. Her artistic lean, which
began at an early age, was supported by both her parents and teachers.
Drawing was her true passion and she continued to be inspired by farming
and ranching, nature, and God's beauty that she found everywhere. Since
formal exposure to the art world was minimal in the rural farming community,
Pat chose nursing as a profession. Over the next 18 years, she worked
as a nurse in Ohio, California, and finally Virginia where she and her
husband, Ric, settled to raise sheep and their three children. While sheep
were initially a major part of her work, more frequently now the American
west is her main subject. Pat works mostly in oil on canvas in a soft,
realistic way to express the special joy felt by a certain light, or a
fleeting moment. She explains, "Inspiration for painting is everywhere-especially
when the light source is right. My favorite subjects are animals, especially
dogs, and cowboys. But I also enjoy still life and landscapes all the
while seeing the beauty in each. I want to leave a sense of well being
and tranquility. Beauty is everywhere and I have been blessed to find
it." |

Mostly self-taught through hard work, observation of good art in books and magazines, through the years Pat challenged herself to do better and better work. Never satisfied, she finds the initial layout "rush" to become hard work while striving for excellence. Sometimes begun from sketches, her method usually is drawing directly on canvas with the brush from references gathered or a still life. Pat remembers falling asleep on summer nights to sounds of cicadas and tractors tilling in the neighbor's field. From these early impressions she hopes to communicate her love of the land, man's toil, and animal husbandry. A highlight of inspiration for Pat was attending a workshop in Texas lead by noted artist Loren Entz, and occasional trips out West, mainly to Montana and Yellowstone. The Montana exposure also netted her book illustrations for a Miranda and Starlight series by Montana writer, Janet Muirhead Hill, and is in the early stages of a mini-series for T.V. It is a fast-paced wholesome book about a pre-teen, horse-crazy girl and her adventures. Pat did book jackets and chapter illustrations for the five books already completed. In addition, a textile company, Simply Home, carries her artwork reproduced on throws, pillows, and accessories. |
Pat has captured
numerous awards for her work including several First Place and Best In
Show. She has shown in Baltimore area shows for many years, sold paintings
through national specialty dog shows, and shows locally. Due to this publicity,
her work hangs in private collections across American and abroad, as well.
In addition, she is now represented in a Bozeman, MT gallery. Pat is a
member of the Depot Artists Association. |
