Wednesday Morning Painters

For further information on the “Wednesday Morning Painters” please call the Arts Depot at (276) 628-9091.

All persons interested in painting in an informal, relaxed atmosphere are encouraged to attend. All skill levels are represented from beginners to the more experienced. This affords the opportunity for all to be involved in a support group that is totally encouraging and non-threatening. All art medias are represented and people are encouraged to “do their own thing” and stay and paint for only a short time or as long as they want. Also, at times, videos on art techniques are shown. There is no specific charge to attend, but after participating in a couple of the sessions, attendees are expected to become members of the Depot Artists Association. Modest voluntary donations are also accepted at each session to help offset the cost of utilities and other operating expenses. The Wednesday Morning Painters do not meet during the months of July and August.

The Arts Depot is a non-profit volunteer organization that is dedicated to promoting the arts in the community and features the region’s artists. The Arts Depot is located in the historic Depot Square area of downtown Abingdon, VA. The gallery is open Thursday thru Saturday, 11-3 pm, or by appointment. There is no admission charge. The painters of the Arts Depot’s “Wednesday Morning Painters” group are holding their Third Annual Exhibit of their recent works in the Special Exhibits Gallery of the Arts Depot. This exhibit continues through October 24, 2009. Of the approximately thirty people in the group, twenty-one are exhibiting seventy-eight of their works. While watercolor is the most predominant medium, many works were created in oil, acrylic, colored pencil, charcoal, pencil, pen & ink, mosaic, and pastels. The subjects of the paintings include floral, still life, portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes - something for everyone to enjoy. The artists exhibiting are: from Abingdon, VA: Nancy Camicia, Linda Hamilton, Penny Hite, Glenda Kolesar, Adelaide Moss, Marjorie McNeer, Pat Mighell, Hannah Stam, Katy Edwards, Mary Harrington, and Libby Scroggin; from Bristol, TN: Bill Brinkley, and Connie Green ; from Bristol, VA: Claudia Rutherford, Nancy Simmons, and Jane Eller, from Saltville, VA: Donna Kaylor; from Glade Spring, VA: Stephanie Grimes; from Meadowview, VA: Barbara McSparin; from Blowing Rock, NC: Joann Hess; and from Lenoir, NC: Toni Indicott. The Arts Depot invites you to come and see what outstanding talent exists in our region.

How did this group come about? Originally the “Wednesday Morning Painters” of the Arts Depot were the “Tuesday Night Painters” meeting at the Life Saving Crew Hall. In the late 1980’s Landon Woody (deceased), Janet Rasnick (deceased), Vicki Marsh and Ron Roark began meeting at the Crew Hall to paint and share camaraderie. As time went by, however, they decided that getting out and driving at night wasn’t such a great idea – thus after the Arts Depot opened in 1990, the Wednesday Morning Painters began.

The present group of “Wednesday Morning Painters” comes from several nearby towns in Virginia and Tennessee, with two individuals driving each week all the way from the Boone/Blowing Rock, North Carolina area. Currently there are thirty people in the group ages twenty-something to the eighties, with an average of about fifteen attending each Wednesday.

Painting takes place in the back room on long tables, with a pot of coffee brewing nearby. The majority paint in watercolor, although some use acrylic, oils, pencil, and pastels. All levels of skill are in attendance and everyone learns from everyone else. The atmosphere is relaxed, even friendly. If one person forgets to bring brushes or a particular color of needed paint, another person is happy to share theirs. Painting begins around 10 am and ends around 2 PM, although painters come and go at whatever time suits them. Some bring their lunch and paint into the early afternoon. Others leave before lunch for work or to do other things. One of the nicest things about the Group is the informality. There is certainly no cause for anyone to feel intimidated about painting with the Wednesday Morning Painters. There is no charge to attend, but after participating in a few of the sessions, attendees are expected to become members of the Depot Artists Association ($25/year dues). Modest voluntary donations are also accepted at each session to help offset the cost of utilities and other operating expenses. Usually the group takes the months of July and August off, as well as Wednesdays close to a holiday. The group says: “If you have some free time, a desire for friendship, and a yearning to express your creativity through art, come and join us. We have a FANTASTIC time!”
