Literary Arts at the Depot...

The Appalachian Center for Poets and Writers
meets on the last Friday of each month at the Arts Depot. ACPW is a small group of talented writers who gather to share readings, critiques, and spirited discussions. The group intends to help each other with writings in progress in a low pressure atmosphere. It is open to both poets and fiction writers. You should bring 10 to 12 copies of your work to share. For more information, call Edison Jennings:
276-623-1873 or Lena McNicholas, 276-676-2971.

The Sow's Ear Press is the publisher of a national quarterly poetry review and poetry books by regional poets and is a member of the Arts Depot Artists Association. Their books are available for purchase at the Arts Depot.

Counting the Sums
Rita Sims Quillen

"These are poems about paths, individual, rocky, secret; paths of significant grief and motherhood. But they are also about paths that link up and connect people in larger families and communities across time, with the truth that hurts and frees us. Rita Quillen has a voice you will not forget."
Robert Morgan

A page from our book,
Counting the Sums. . .

I used to be a teacup
bone and gold-rimmed
thin-lipped and light
slim-handled
easy to hold.

Then I became a mug
heavy and practical
people warmed their hands on me
warm steam rising
scented the air
with home and good.

If I live I'll grow to be
a gravy boat
sailing around
smug and self-satisfied
filled with an imperfect, lumpy mixture
comforting and familiar
only brought out on special occasions. --

Rita Sims Quillen
