Nancy Garretson, Studio Artist

Nancy has been a professional artist/weaver since 1972 when she moved to Southwest Virginia after receiving her master's degree in crafts from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She currently maintains her studio at the Arts Depot in Abingdon, Virginia. Her studio is open to the public.

"Coming from a fine arts background, I saw weaving as a unique art medium," she says. "For me, weaving has it all, the color and design of painting and the form and texture of sculpture. I weave tapestries mostly, some flat tapestries but others have textures and layers of cloth that are stuffed and shaped. Sometimes sticks, feathers and other found objects are incorporated into the designs. Most of my pieces are autobiographical, even if they do not at first appear so. They are created out of my life's experiences, landscapes, people and emotions. I am still searching and growing as an artist and as a person. My goal is to continue to do so."

Over the years, Nancy Garretson has shown her work in numerous galleries and museums including the Carroll Reese Museum, Johnson, City, Tennessee; the Virginia Museum of Fine arts, Richmond, Virginia; the Carlton Gallery, Banner Elk, North Carolina; the Baldridge Gallery, Richmond, Virginia; and galleries at Lynchburg College, Virginia Intermont College, Roanoke College and Emory and Henry College
